Renting

PG vs shared flat vs studio: what should you rent?

Published 14 August 2026 · updated 31 August 2026

Cost, freedom and paperwork compared for young professionals moving to a new city.

Moving to Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune or Chennai for a job? The first decision is the kind of place to rent.

Paying guest (PG)

Cheapest and simplest: a bed or room with food, housekeeping and Wi-Fi rolled into one monthly amount, typically ₹8,000–₹20,000 in the metros. No deposit beyond one month, no furniture to buy, but house rules on guests and timings.

Shared flat

More freedom and usually more space for ₹10,000–₹25,000 a head, but you are on the lease: security deposits of 2–10 months' rent (Bengaluru is notorious), utilities, a maid, and finding a replacement flatmate when someone leaves.

Studio / 1 RK

Privacy without the cost of a full 1 BHK. ₹12,000–₹30,000 in the metros depending on locality. Check the building has a proper lease and that the unit is not an illegal subdivision.
